Knowing about SEO is so time sensitive because it changes at least every few months.  Keeping up to date is therefore a constant battle.  Even people who attended my Internet Mastery events six months ago need to update their skills and knowledge.

During the past week I learned several new key skills for Google SEO.  Each one is very new – only released in the last three weeks – and is centred around your use of Google tools including Google+, Google local and the search words ‘How to’ and ‘Where can’.

One thing that I can tell you is that it is now more important than ever to use Google’s tools and services including:

  • Google analytics
  • Google+
  • Google local
  • Blogger.com
  • YouTube
  • Google maps

The bottom line is:

Google likes websites and companies that like and use Google.

The biggest lie in Marketing is – “Our website is just a brochure website”

Well, sometimes it is a lie, whilst others it is simply an excuse.

Let’s be honest here:

1. Your website cost you money and perhaps lots of it

2. You could be winning business from it, but if you are like 95% of businesses, then you don’t

3. You do very little to market your website and you spend even less money to drive traffic to your website

4. Your website has no clear MWA (most wanted action).  In other words, there is nothing to sign up for and no call to action.

If you have one of those nice websites with an attractive rotating picture across the top of the home page, then I guarantee that you are losing money.  Now don’t make the mistake of thinking – I will get a new website designed.  If it is not built properly and with Marketing in mind, then you will just have another website that does not work and I don’t want that for you.  Let’s face it, most websites are a complete waste of money!

In summary

There are two keys to winning business from your website:

1. Traffic

2. Conversion

If you are like 90% of the businesses I speak to, then your website creates nothing, or very little, in terms of return on investment. But of course – it should!

So, what’s the problem?  There are essentially two problems:

1. You are not getting enough high quality traffic to your site.  For example, nobody visits it and they can’t find it on Google;

2. When people arrive at your site, they often leave without buying, or even making an enquiry.

The solution?

You have got to increase the number of people who visit your site from 100 per day, week, or month. You have also got to improve the conversion rate of your site.

Question

Is is easier to get more people to your site, or to get those visiting to buy more?  You probably know that the answer is to get more of the people already interested, to buy more.

Another question – How much time have you spent focussing on the conversion rate of your website in the past year?
