Umbongo Marketing

One day a marketing advisor set off on a tour of remote African villages.  His purpose was to teach the word of marketing to the villagers.

He turned up at the first village and started to deliver the first training session. He told the villagers all about the power of branding, image advertising, and getting your logo recognised.  He told them that they needed to spend lots of money on advertising, design and brand recognition.  He said that marketing was difficult to measure and you had to ‘just give it a go’.  Upon hearing this, the villagers all started shouting:

Umbongo, Umbongo, Umbongo.

This got the marketing advisor even more inspired to deliver his message.

He spoke about the need to invest in on-line marketing and how important it is to have a good looking website.  He said that it did not matter if it did not create leads, because the website just needed to be a brochure site!  This got the villagers even more animated and they started shouting even louder:

Umbongo, Umbongo, Umbongo!

The marketing advisor continued, by telling them that, all they needed to do on-line was to have a website and then pay someone a load of money and they would get the site on to the first page on something called ‘Google’.  He then told them that all they needed to do to grow their business was to rely on referral and BNI and that was it.  He told them that marketing was simple and that any fool could do it.  This got the villagers even more animated.

Umbongo, Umbongo, Umbongo they shouted!

When he had finished he explained to the chief that he wanted to go to the next village to tell them about the wonderful world of marketing. The Chief said “if you follow the river for 10 miles you will come to the next village”.  He continued “you will be fine, but you must be careful when you cross the first field, because it is full of bulls and you need to make sure that you don’t tread in any Umbongo”.

So my message is – If you want marketing advice without any ‘Umbongo’, then contact me – The Prudent Marketer.  Marketing without the Umbongo (BS).

Business Coaching UK

Steve Mills - Marketing adviceWhat have you got to do differently to grow your business in 2014?  The old saying “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always got” is no longer true!

The key is consistent and never-ending improvement, because if you are not moving forwards, then you are moving backwards.

Here are 7 skills you need to improve:

  1. The first skill is to know where you are and to measure your results
  2. Step two is to produce a business plan
  3. Step three is about consistent innovation of your products, services, marketing and sales
  4. The next step is to create ‘world-class’ marketing
  5. You then need to improve your sales skills by ceasing ‘sales mastery systems’
  6. Then there is ensuring your legal and financial systems and analysis is in place and you have a high level of financial knowledge
  7. You need to adapt a ‘raving fan’ client system and culture

During the current difficult and uncertain times only a few wise people will truly take action to grow their business.

Moving the free line

Steve Mills - Marketing adviceWhen it comes to marketing everyone knows that the word ‘free’ is the most powerful word in marketing.  So, the question is – what can you do for free?  For most businesses they offer:

  • A free session
  • A free hour
  • A free sample

But the truth is that it is no good doing the same as everyone else.  Because if you do, you will get the same results as everyone else and most businesses are struggling to survive!

So, the real question is – what can you offer for free that is different from everyone else?  In other words, how can you move ‘the free line’?  Well you could give a:

  • Free e-book
  • Free report
  • Free seminar
  • Free webinar
  • Free CD, or DVD
  • Free day
  • Free weekend
  • Free test drive
  • Free…

Look at it this way – Imagine you offered something free on your website and because you marketed it effectively on social media, email marketing and SEO, 100 people download it every month.  As you are great at sales and marketing you follow all 100 people up within 24 hours and you convert 50% of those into an initial meeting.  You then convert 50% of those meetings into sales.  This would result in 25 new sales per month.

I personally use this strategy on my website.  I have a book called ‘The 10 Biggest Lead Generation Mistakes’ on there and between 5 and 20 people download it every day.

What is your story?  How could you move your free line by offering something for free in order to get more people on to your sales pipeline?

Internet marketing advice

Recently I delivered a seminar on Internet Marketing.  One of the delegates told me that he had just spent £10,000 on a new website because their old site was not generating him any business.

While the numbers involved are high, the basic story was so typical.  I can’t remember how many times I have met people who have spent money on a ‘new website‘, because their old one was not working and so they now have a more attractive website, that still does not work!

These people are often fustrated, having spent money on a new website, but they are not winning any business from it.

The reason is simple.  Most websites are breaking almost every marketing rule in the book and they are simply not marketed effectively.  They might look nice, but they are just on-line brochures, that no one looks at.

If you want to win business on-line, then there are two things you need to do:

  1. Create more traffic
  2. Improve your websites conversion rate

I believe in practicing what I preech, so if you want to take a look at just some of my results on Google, then go to Google and type in ‘internet markaining berkshire’, or ‘marketing advice berkshire’, or ‘linkedin training berkshire’.

If you want to get retults on-line like I do, then I will show you how, during my one day workshop.  For further information, or to register for the event, simply click the link below:

Internet Marketing Training

Over Christmas, 1 in 5 purchases were made on line here in the UK.  Next and John Lewis took the lead in retail sales.  Senior management within these companies stated that a great website is only half of it.  The real key is exceptional service thereafter, delivery of goods, customer service etc.

Are you losing sales because of the ‘disconnection’ between your sales and marketing team?  Sales and Marketing have the same objective, but different roles and often blame each other for poor results.
