Is now the right time to invest in marketing?

Yes it is. OK you knew I was going to say that, didn’t you? But let me explain why.

Firstly, what are your competitors doing? That is right, they are cutting back. What does that actually mean? It means that your competitors are happy to know that their sales are going to go down the tube! So the first reason to invest is that others aren’t and so it is currently less competitive.

Secondly, the pie has shrunk. In other words, there is less business out there and so if you are going to gain market share, then you have got to raise your marketing game.

Thirdly, the world is changing. for 30 years my catch phrase was “If you always do what you’ve always done, then you’ll always get what you’ve always got”. But I can tell you that it is no longer true. If you keep doing the same thing you are not even going to get what you’ve always got. You must do better and more of it.

I am sure I could list many more reasons to keep marketing, but there is three for you to think about.

Facebook Training

Business owners view Facebook in four different ways:

1. They view Facebook as something people do for social reasons and it is not for business
2. They believe Facebook is useful to businesses, but they are not sure what to do to market themselves using Facebook
3. They use Facebook effectively to market their businesses and do so reasonably well
4. They win a significant amount of business from Facebook

As far as percentages are concerned, I think that they would fall into the following:

1. 45%
2. 45%
3. 8%
4. 2%

So my strong advice is that if you are not in the top 2% then you need to seriously consider some form of training, or hiring someone who is trained and who knows what they are doing.

Facebook Training for Business

On 8th February I am running an half day workshop to help business owners to grow their businesses using Facebook. The workshop starts at 9.30am and runs until 1.00pm.

Would you hire a marketing person who…

Would you hire a marketing person who does not have any training, little experience, they don’t have the time and they have no qualifications?

Well that is what most small business owners do every day.

In other words they try to do their own marketing and they don’t even bother to get themselves trained in doing so. They then they waste lot’s of money on marketing and say things like “Advertising does not work in my industry”, or “My website is just a brochure site and is not about creating leads, etc, etc, etc”.

I am sorry, but if you are like the 98% of small businesses who are doing this, then STOP right now.

You need to get help with your marketing. It does not have to be me (it should be), but you need to hire someone.

Look at it this way

You would not think “I don’t need an accountant, I will do it myself”. Or “I don’t need an I.T. company, I will do it myself” (unless you have those skills).

So why leave the most important part of your business to someone who does not know what they are doing?

Namely YOU.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not wishing to be rude and I am sure you have expertise and skills in areas I don’t have. But look at it this way. Let’s imagine you are a Training Company. You have 10+ years of experience in training people in management skills.

Here is the problem:

Just because you have the skills to do the operational work of the business, does not mean that you have the skills to sell and market a business that does that work.

And so what often happens it that the business either dies, or struggles along with the owner of that business working 70 to 80 hours per week, often earning less money than they did in a job. Is this you?

Business Accelerator Programme

If you run a small business, but you are not making the profit you want, the solution is simple. You need to do something different.

More leads, sales and ultimatley more profit. You are probably someone who is busy running their business and who knows that they are not marketing themselves as well as they could.

You may be looking for help and high level expertise, but you can’t really afford to pay a marketing advisor a daily rate. If that sounds like you, then I suggest you take a look at The Business Accelerator Programme.

Is this the most stupid statement ever?

Is this the most stupid statement ever? If so why is it made by so many small business owners?

Something to think about…

If you could improve your lead conversion rate from 40% to 60% (through training) you would have grown your business by 50%. Something to think about?

Your conversion rates

I have been banging on for some time about Raising your Game and 2011 is the perfect time for change. I cannot stress enough to readers of my blog the importance of learning more about business and improving your sales and marketing skills.

Remember sales and marketing is the life-blood of business and if you want a different result you MUST change you approach, or your actions.

Ask yourself a question – What are your current conversion rates? Rates like the number of leads it takes you to get a sale, or the number of people you need to visit your website to get a lead.

My advice is that you need to firstly know your current conversion rates, then working with me we could work together to improve those rates.
